Overview

GovCIO is currently hiring for React Developer to join our team as a Senior Front-end Engineer building government digital services in an open-source environment (currently the largest open-source effort within Federal government). This will be a fully remote position within the United States.

 

You will be joining a team partnering with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to help Veterans and their families avoid, manage, and resolve VA debts. This important work will be instrumental to ensure that Veterans and their families resolve debts quickly and easily, while avoiding unnecessary fees and penalties. By delivering new features and enhancements informed by user feedback and research, our team will improve the digital experience for managing VA debt, while treating each Veteran with dignity and respect.

Responsibilities

  • Build, refactor, and maintain React components, and services with an emphasis on modular, scalable design.
  • Design and maintain automated unit, integration, and end-to-end tests using frameworks such as Cypress.
  • Incorporate accessibility (Section 508, WCAG 2.1AA) and US Web Design System standards into development.
  • Apply DevOps practices (CI/CD, monitoring, cloud services) to ensure reliable delivery and operations.
  • Contribute as part of an Agile team to deliver features, enhancements, and bug fixes that improve the Veteran debt management experience.
  • Participate in backlog refinement, user story acceptance criteria, and story sizing.
  • Collaborate with teammates through code reviews, pair programming, and knowledge sharing.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience on the job plus 8+ years of experience as a software engineer (Or commensurate experience).
  • 3+ years of production experience with React.js.
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining and enhancing applications with modern JavaScript frameworks, a component-based design system, and REST APIs.
  • Experience with DevOps processes and tools (CI/CD, monitoring, automation).
  • Experience writing automated tests and building testable code (unit, integration, end-to-end).
  • Experience in cloud environments (AWS or equivalent) how to apply them effectively.

 Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience with Ruby on Rails and SQL.
  • Familiarity with the latest React features and ecosystem (hooks, context API).
  • Experience with Sidekiq or other job managers.
  • Familiarity with AWS monitoring tools, Sentry, or Datadog.
  • Experience with PostgresDB and Redis.
  • Experience with RJSF library generation.
  • Working knowledge of USDS playbook and VA Digital Services Handbook.
  • Experience with continuous integration/deployment systems (Jenkins, GitHub Actions).
  • Familiarity with the US Web Design System.
  • Familiarity with Section 508 and WCAG 2.1AA accessibility standards and testing tools.
  • Familiarity with AI development tools (Copilot, Cursor, Claude-Code).
  • Experience developing knowledge of complex domains and systems.
  • Ability to work across multiple applications, components, languages, and frameworks.
  • Experience working in a cross-functional team (research, design, engineering, product).
  • Contributions to open-source projects.
  • Experience working in or with government agencies, especially VA.

Clearance Required: Must be able to obtain a Public Trust clearance.

Posted Pay Range

The posted pay range, if referenced, reflects the range expected for this position at the commencement of employment, however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, education, experience, and internal equity. The total compensation package for this position may also include other compensation elements, to be discussed during the hiring process. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the GovCIO reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, GovCIO or individual department/team performance, and market factors.

Posted Salary Range

USD $125,000.00 - USD $140,000.00 /Yr.
