Overview

GovCIO is currently hiring for a Journeyman PaaS Cutter System Administrator / Engineer, specializing in Windows Server and Microsoft HyperV support, to provide day to day engineering and operational administration for a mission critical U.S. Coast Guard program. This position will be located in Kearneysville, WV and will be a hybrid position.

Responsibilities

The Journeyman System Administrator / Engineer will support both physical and virtualized Windows Server environments, perform routine system maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and assist with implementing cybersecurity and configuration standards. The role requires solid technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate across engineering and operations teams.

Key responsibilities include:

 

  • Provide Tier II/Tier III support for Windows Server 2019/2016 and Hyper‑V environments, including VM provisioning, configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
  • Support cutter-based and shoreside environments by maintaining system availability, configuration baselines, and lifecycle sustainment activities.
  • Assist with maintaining Hyper‑V clusters, including replication, failover functionality, and performance tuning under senior engineering guidance.
  • Conduct routine administration of Dell PowerEdge servers, including diagnostics, firmware updates, RAID configuration, storage management, and iDRAC access.
  • Manage and support standard network services such as Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and TCP/IPv4 configurations.
  • Apply and maintain DISA STIGs and security best practices to ensure compliance across NIPRNet and SIPRNet systems.
  • Maintain and support Windows Deployment Services (WDS) for PXE‑based imaging and system deployment workflows.
  • Participate in system modernization tasks such as OS upgrades, hardware refresh cycles, and platform optimization efforts.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Security, Commvault, Patch Management, and Vulnerability Management teams to support operational readiness and cybersecurity posture.
  • Create and update documentation, including configuration guides, troubleshooting steps, and operational procedures.
  • Generate and review system performance, availability, and capacity reports.
  • Provide mentorship to junior team members by sharing knowledge and best practices.
  • Participate in an on‑call rotation to support after‑hours operational requirements.

Qualifications

High School with 6 - 9 years (or commensurate experience)

Required Skills and Experience

  • Current DoD 8570 IAT Level II certification (e.g., Security+ CE, CySA+, CCNA Security).
  • Hands‑on experience administering Windows Server 2019/2016, including system configuration, troubleshooting, and patching.
  • Practical knowledge of Hyper‑V virtualization, clustering concepts, VM management, and virtual networking.
  • Experience managing Dell PowerEdge hardware, including RAID, firmware updates, and diagnostics.
  • Working understanding of Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and TCP/IPv4.
  • Ability to perform scripting or automation tasks using PowerShell.
  • Familiarity with applying DISA STIGs, MFA, ACLs, and secure configurations.
  • Experience with imaging workflows, WDS, PXE deployments, and patch management processes.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across server, virtualization, hardware, and OS layers.
  • Ability to develop clear, accurate documentation for system configurations and processes.
  • Basic understanding of ITIL service management principles.

     Clearance Required: Must be clearable up to an active Secret clearance. 


Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience supporting DoD or U.S. Coast Guard cutter environments.
  • Experience working in degraded, disconnected, or low‑bandwidth conditions.
  • Familiarity with Commvault, enterprise patching, and vulnerability management tools.
  • Exposure to server modernization efforts such as recapitalization and OS upgrades.
  • Understanding of PaaS, IaaS, and hybrid infrastructure operational models.
  • Ability to work effectively with cross‑functional engineering and operations teams.

Posted Pay Range

The posted pay range, if referenced, reflects the range expected for this position at the commencement of employment, however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, education, experience, and internal equity. The total compensation package for this position may also include other compensation elements, to be discussed during the hiring process. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the GovCIO reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, GovCIO or individual department/team performance, and market factors.

Posted Salary Range

USD $90,000.00 - USD $119,000.00 /Yr.
